My classroom expectations are set up to keep everyone safe and give them peace of mind as they come to school every day. My policies and expectations are strict, with little room for excuses, to keep everything fair and honest. I also expect students to hold each other accountable as well. If at any time there is a legitimate reason for missed homework or late assignments, I will always accept a parent/guardian phone call, email or note with the expectation that the assignment will be handed in the next day.
Classroom Rules
Be safe Be Responsible Be kind - we will also construct a Class Social Contract together and promise to all follow.
Discipline/ Rewards
Individual – Aside from the school wide rewards (Husky Paw, PBS (Personal Best Slip - Academic), Positive Phone Call Home), students earn Class Dojo points for positive and responsible behavior in my classroom. With the "points" they earn students may “purchase” items from the “Reward Store”.
Pods – Pods can also earn Class Dojo points for demonstrating good behavior and for being prepared.
Whole class – The class as a whole earns rewards with Class Dojo points as well.
Consequences for poor choices – All choices have consequences, be there good or bad, in my classroom.
First - Students will receive a verbal warning from me.
Next- If the behavior continues, the student will begin losing minutes off of their afternoon recess.
Then – The student will be sent to a Buddy Teacher’s classroom to fill out a Thinking Sheet AND go to study hall during afternoon recess. Thinking Sheets are to be signed by parents/guardians. If a student does not return a signed Thinking Sheet they are in study hall until it is returned.
Finally – If the behavior does not cease the student will receive an office referral, which is dealt in collaboration with me and administration. *Some behaviors that are severe enough (i.e. fighting and defiance) will skip all prior steps and go straight to an office referral. Sometimes students do not finish work in class and will be asked to go to study hall to finish it and will remain there until recess is over. If the assignment is still not finished, then it is expected to be taken home for homework.
Procedures
Our class Wiki (this website) is to be viewed by a parent and student, nightly.
Homework to be done every night and turned in each morning.
Thursday folder (homework folders) are sent home on Thursdays and returned on Fridays. They may contain graded papers and notes from me and/or the school.
Snack/Water Bottles
I highly encourage students to bring in a healthy snack every day (unhealthy snacks such as candy, soda etc. will not be allowed). 5th grade lunch is the last lunch period of the day and the kids need to "re-fuel" during in the morning. I would also ask that students bring in a water bottle (with their name on it) so that they have access to water at all times. I would also like them to take their water bottles home each day to rinse and refill.
Homework
Monday – Thursday No homework on Fridays or holidays (unless the student needs to catch up on missing assignments ) Monday – Thursday homework includes, but not limited to: Math practice worksheet Study multiplication and division facts daily – Book Club/ Social Studies Assignment. Students are expected to turn late homework in and will be in study hall during second recess to complete that homework. If a student does not have a parent signature on their planner AND does not have their homework, that student will be going to study hall, no exceptions. All homework will be posted on our Google Homework calendar on this Wiki page.
Make-up Work
If a student misses school, he/she will be given two days for each day absent in which to complete make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the work missed during the absence and turn it in promptly. All instructions will be posted on our Edmodo page, so students can virtually stay in touch with the classroom and classmates. I will also give detailed instruction on assignments that were missed. If you know your child will be absent in advance, please notify me at least one day prior so I can get the work ready ahead of time. If your child misses school, they will receive the work when they return to school.
Lunch
Lunch is at 12:35. Students go to a 15-minute recess before eating lunch. All lunch money can be turned in to me (either cash or check) in the mornings.
Birthdays/Holiday Celebrations
While I believe it is perfectly acceptable to celebrate and acknowledge birthdays, students will not be given much time in class to do so. If you would like to send in a healthy treat for your student to pass out, that will be done at the end of the day and the snacks will be sent home with the students. In regards to party invitations, please make sure that if your child is going to pass them out in class that there is one for everyone. Otherwise, students may pass out invitations outside of school on their own time. Holidays may not always be celebrated in school. I would like to respect the fact that not everyone celebrates and if there are objections, we will not have a class "party" or "celebration". Even if we do all agree that we should celebrate a certain holiday, it will definitely not be an all day event as it may have been in the primary grades. I will inform everyone well in advance how we will proceed with celebrations.
How you will know how your child is doing in school:
Emails and phone calls as needed, quarterly progress reports, report cards, parent/teacher conferences, Edmodo grade book.
Class Website
Our class website IS this Wiki page, where you will be able to find out everything from what is going on in the classroom to what is for homework each night. If at any time you need assistance, please let me know. Curriculum Math –Envision Math Reading – Balanced Literacy Writing – Excellence in Writing & Harcourt Language Arts Social Studies – Harcourt Social Studies - United States History Science – Harcourt Science Curriculum.
We will also have a class Edmodo page, which will be used predominately by the students, but parents can refer to it to track students grades as well as missing assignments. I plan to go over this during Open House.
